Summer Infant Best View Digital Color Video Monitor review

Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken! This is what I think goes best for the Summer Infant Best View Digital Color Video Monitor – the incredibly long named baby monitor that we’re reviewing in today’s article.

There’s a new version of this product available for purchase on Amazon: the Summer Infant Baby Secure 2.5″ Pan/Scan/Zoom Video Baby Monitor which is similarly long-named and considered by many an upgrade. I, personally, go with what I know is guaranteed to work, and that’s the Best View Digital Color baby monitor.

So in today’s review, I will run you through its features, pros and cons and share with you my personal opinion of the product. This way, you will be able to make an informed decision when it comes to buying it.

Now let’s move on to our in-depth review of the Best View Digital Color baby monitor by Summer Infant

Let us start by taking a look at the features advertised by the manufacturer:

  • fully private connection that offers complete security
  • range of up to 400 feet
  • 2.5″ color LCD screen which switches automatically to black and white night vision
  • Pan, scan and zoom capabilities
  • Led lights (sound activated)
  • add up to 3 more cameras to monitor multiple rooms (with video and audio auto-scan between rooms)

In other words, this baby monitor has all the main features that you might want or need from a high quality baby monitor. But does it manage to deliver? Let’s find out how it actually works and performs!

One of the most important things when it comes to monitors – be them video monitors or audio monitors – is its actual range it covers.

Its advertised 400 feet usually works in wide open spaces – which is not normally the case of most normal living spaces. When inside, walls and other obstacles interfere with the monitor’s range, reducing it drastically. However, for an average house or apartment, we found it to work really well. The signal stays strong and there were rarely any problems encountered.

It has great signal if you go outside for example and you can safely use it without having to worry if you are in the back yard, for example, and the baby monitor is in a nearby room.

The 2.5″ LCD screen is a bit outdated and the image quality isn’t the best nowadays. This is understandable since we’re talking about a baby monitor released a few years ago. However, it does a decent job, the image is generally clear and you can easily see what’s happening in the room. The black and white night vision images are not great, but they can still to the job.

The device also gives you many features and you will be able to move the camera exactly where you need it as you will be able to pan, scan and you will also be able to zoom depending on where you need to see and this can help if you have an irregular shaped room or you just need to get at a particular angle to see your little ones.

The LED lights are also sound activated so you can tell if your child is in distress, without the need to have it turned on at all times. This is useful if you’re working, sleeping or you just need it to only warn you when there’s high noise in the room.

There are, however, a bunch of people complaining about it on sites like Amazon – especially about it’s lower durability and expected life cycle. Some of the customers complain that it stops working after about one year of usage, this being the main reason of complaint and something to take into account.

Of course, there are many who have no reason to complain so the way you use it might also matter here. We’ve never had a problem with this baby monitor, but we also haven’t used one for as long as one year to see if it indeed fails. But based on our own experience, this looks like a decent video baby monitor with solid basic functions which works really well.

Even though the Summer Infant Best View Digital Color video baby monitor was released a few years ago and it doesn’t offer a huge amount of bells and whistles (like room temperature, for example or talk back capabilities), it’s still a decent product selling at just the right price.

There are definitely better options out there – but they are also usually higher priced. In this case, you know that you’re getting what you’re paying for, and you’re paying for decent quality and basic features. But sometimes you don’t really need all those extras.
